Ajax fairytale run continues
Ajax continue their dream run as they defeated striker less Tottenham Hotspurs in the first leg of Champions League semi-final. Van Beek’s goal separated both the sides. In order to bag the final’s spot Spurs have to do a tremendous job in the second leg of semifinals.
There was an electrifying environment at the Spurs new stadium as they’re in semi’s of the UCL after 5 long decades! Stadium was vibrant with white tees and chants of Spurs all around. But that happiness didn’t last long. Though Spurs dominated the first five minutes of game, Ajax did what they’re good at. With high press they didn’t allow Hotspurs defence to breathe. Ajax have drawn the first blood within 15 minutes with beautiful football all thanks to Ziyech’s super assist. Spurs defence looked clueless as Van de Beek scored a crucial away goal. Adding to their misery Spurs lost Vertonghen who was injured in an aerial tackle. Spurs had a couple of half chances from the set-pieces at the end of first half but Llorente failed to find the net.

Ajax dominated the first half as Spurs’ defense crumbled. Playing Wanyama and Rose in the midfield did not help Spurs. They both looked directionless with the ball onto their feet. Alli and Erickson were poor too.. Llorente’s lack of pace affected the chances of the hosts. On the other hand, ajax have been brilliant in both offensive and defensive duties. De Ligt was absolutely rock solid at the back and mid field was energetic as it has been in the past UCL games.
With a deficit of single goal, Spurs started second half on a promising note. Sissoko, who was substituted for Vertonghen, made the difference for the Spurs. Llorente made few important passes, Lucas Moura was brilliant in second half. But the lack of finisher costed the game for Tottenham. It’s clearly evident that they were missing Kane and Son in the upfront. Ajax defence shattered and the team failed to retaliate to Spurs’ end to end passing. Neres blew a brilliant opportunity on the counter attack as Tottenham defence exposed once again. Woodwork denied Neres efforts. Other than this, there wasn’t much action to report about in the second half. Both the teams lost possession frequently and failed to carry the ball upfront. Onana, who was composed throughout the game, denied Spurs any chance. At the end of 90 mins, Ajax have an upper hand over the hosts, leaving them to fight for another 90mins. for their survival in UCL.
Tottenham has got to do exceptionally well in the second leg to move forward. No doubt that Son’s availability will boost their confidence.
